يكي از مهمترين چالشها و مشكلات سيستم هاي حسابداري سنتي، عدم انعكاس ارزش سرمايه ‏هاي فكري در صورتهاي مالي و گزارشات واحدهاي تجاري است. در حاليكه امروزه نقش ‏سرمايه هاي فكري در ايجاد ارزش براي شركتها و واحدهاي تجاري بسيار بيشتر از نقشي است ‏كه سرمايه هاي مالي در واحدها ايفا مي كنند. در اين ميان، حرفه حسابداري و حسابداران نقش ‏مهمي براي يافتن راههاي موثر جهت كنترل و اندازه گيري و سنجش سرمايه هاي فكري بوسيله ‏مدلها و روشهاي ارزيابي اين سرمايه ها بر عهده دارند. تحقيق‌ها نشان مي‌دهد كه مهمترين عامل ‏تاثيرگذار بر مسائل تامين مالي (به عنوان چالش پيش روي شركتها)، حفظ انعطافپـذيري مـالي ‏اسـت. امروزه دانش به عنوان مهم‌ترين سرمايه، جايگزين سرمايه‌هاي مادي به ويژه در محيط ‏رقابتي و فناوري ‌‌شده ‌است. لذا مفهوم سرمايه فكري كاربردي مهم و گسترده يافته ‌است. سرمايه ‏فكري در مشتريان، فرايندها، اطلاعات، علامت تجاري، منابع انساني و سيستم‌هاي سازمان متجلي ‏مي‌شود و نقش فزاينده‌اي در خلق مزيت‌هاي رقابتي پايدار ايفا مي‌كند.‏
