Wastewaters of chemical and pharmaceutical industries because of their high COD (Chemical Oxygen
Demand) levels can contaminate environment and central sewage treatment basins. Organic solvents
introducing to sewage system and impurities from drug synthesis processes are within the most important
contaminants. Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) which is a by-product in cefixim synthesis, directly increase
COD levels of the wastewater. The present article concerns reduction and elimination of this contaminant by
an activated natural zeolite, clinoptilolite. According to our studies, clinoptilolite can decrease more MBT
and consequently more COD from cefixim wastewater in the same conditions as compared with activated
carbon.
