In this research, in an attempt to improve the tensile properties as well as notched impact strength of polypropylene (PP)-based system, aramid short fibers (ASF) and CaCO3 nanoparticles were individually and simultaneously incorporated into PP. To enhance the adhesion of polymer matrix to fibers, surface of aramid fibers were treated by a solution of 10 wt. % NaOH. PP-g-MA were used as a compatibilizer to improve the dispersion of CaCO3 nanoparticles in PP polymer matrix and also to elevate the interaction of nanoparticles and surface treated aramid fiber with PP. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations were performed and consequently the nanostructure formation was investigated. Results showed that the additions of ASF and CaCO3 into PP have noticeably enhanced the tensile and notched-impact performances. Aramid fibers had more influence on the improvement of mechanical properties of PP than nanoCaCO3. Incorporating ASF and CaCO3 nanoparticles simultaneously had greater effect on the notched-impact and tensile strength improvement.
