The Concept of Psychological Reactance across Age and Gender from the Iranian EFL Teachers’ Perspective

Given the prominence of effective factor in teachership, this study intended to look at this issue from a different point of view and investigate the relationship of psychological reactance among Foreign Language (EFL) teachers across age and gender. To this end, a total number of 139 EFL teachers completed the Hong Psychological Reactance scale (HPRS) with two subscales of “desire for freedom” and “sense of resistance”. To analyze the data, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test was exerted to test normalization of variables. Taking into account the two variables of age and gender, four hypotheses were accordingly formulated to measure the participants level of psychological reactance through their desire of freedom (DFF) and sense of resistance (SOR). Two tests were employed for method procedure. Parametric test of Pearson Correlation Analysis, an Independent Sample T-Test, and the correlations of the participants’ level of reactance with their gender and age were thus examined. The findings revealed no significant positive relationship between the desire of freedom (DFF) and age. In addition, there was no significant relationship between DFF and gender. Quite similarly, there was no relationship between age and SOR. Nevertheless, the findings revealed a significant relationship regarding gender and SOR. In the end, suggestions and implications were provided
