Using dyes in various industries and then discharging their effluents into water resource without proper treatment will contribute a significant source of pollutions. Dye-containing effluents can be highly toxic, non-biodegradable, and carcinogenic for human being and aquatic life, even at low concentrations. Therefore, prior pretreatment of colored industrial wastewater before discharging into the hydrosphere is extremely important to environment safety. Among the conventional methods used for treating dye-containing wastewaters, adsorption is the most attractive method due to economic advantage, simplicity of operation and wide-ranging available. Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer found in nature and its derivatives have been widely used in water treatment. This study reports the synthesis of zero-valent iron nanoparticles functionalized cellulose under mild reaction conditions which used for removal of crystal violet (CV) from aqueous solution. The synthesized material has been characterized using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The effect of various experimental parameters on dye solution adsorption, such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and the initial dye concentration was investigated to optimize the conditions for the maximum adsorption of dye. The removal was achieved maximum at pH value of 10. It was found that more than 93% of dye was removed when 100 mg of prepared adsorbent was treated with 50 mL of CV dye solution of 50 mg/L within 30 minutes. The results show that chemically modified cellulose seems to be a promising adsorbent for dye removal from aqueous wastewaters
