In biological reactors complex intracellular reactions occurs during cellular metabolism through which the raw materials are converted into products. When applying mathematical models to biological processes, we need to use equations that are simple, relevant and easily verifiable in the laboratory. For this paper, many searches were conducted using appropriate keywords in various scientific databases and some articles related to the application of mathematical models in biological processes were studied. In order to describe of cells behavior in bioreactors, it needs to understand mathematical models that describes cell growth and substrate utilization. For cell growth there are some empirical models such as Monod, Contois, Modified Monod, Monod like non-competitive inhibition and Monod like non-competitive product inhibition models. To describe substrate utilization there are mathematical models that describes three uses of substrate in cells to sustain energy for maintenance of cells, for production of new cells and for synthesis of chemical products. It is very important to understand mathematical models to describe cell behaviors for successful applications of bioreactors.
