In stone-cutting industry, water is used for cooling, cutting equipment and preventing dust emission. The water used, is supplied from underground water or transmitted to the factory by tanks. Consumptive water in the stone-cutting process is conveyed by drainage canal towards ponds and collected there. This is water which is called drainage water has lost its original characteristics and contains high levels of minerals and pollutions. This industrially polluted drainage water traditionally are collected in sedimentation ponds or filtered by compression filter. This paper highlights the advantage and disadvantages of these methods and compares it with a low maintenance low cost system called hydrocyclone. A 22 mm hydrocyclone was used to find out the efficiency of the system in collecting and separating suspended particles from drainage water. The effects of operating parameters, namely concentration and flow rates were reported.
