Aquaculture has been one of the fastest growing sectors in recent years. FAO statistics show that world s aquaculture production has been 76,641,025 tons in 2015, and Turkey s share is 253 395 tonnes. Turkey is among fastest growing countries in Mediterranean countries, it s aquaculture position is located in the first row. There are 25 hatcheries in Turkey and they are predominantly located in the Aegean region, have a 930 million fry production capacity. There are also 10 aquarium fish companies which 6.3 million production and 2 sturgeon farm which have 6.6 million production capacity permit. According to the sector data, it is targeted to produce 550 million fry for marine fish production in 2018 and 600 million fry till 2019. Besides these, it is estimated that approximately 50% of aquarium fish and 2% of sturgeon fish are produced. Marine fish are heavily fed from live food during the larval period in the aquaculture. While rotifer and Artemia are used in sea bream fry production, direct Artemia is used in the first feed in sea bass larvae production. For this reason, the most important live food support of fry is Artemia sp. The Artemia requirement changes by the production protocol, rearing species and quality of Artemia, but generally 100-150 kg Artemia cycts are used for 1 million fry production (average 125 kg Artemia / million fish). Accordingly, for fish production of 550 million fishes, 55-82,5 tonnes of Artemia is required. It is expected that this amount will require a significant improvement when the full capacities of marine fish, aquarium and sturgeon fish are taken into consideration. Distribution of Turkey origin of Artemia used in the cultivation of marine fishes San Francisco (60%), Russia (including Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan) (35%), China (3,5%) and Turkey (1.5%) were detected.
