Fucoxanthin is an alleniccarotenoid that has shown multiple beneficial effects o n human health. Direct synthesis of fucoxan thin is difficult, therefore,microalgae arethe suitable source forproduction of this valuable pigment due to high biomass prod uctivity andtolerance against harsh conditio ns. Also they are proper for continuous cultiva tion. To this end, series of experiments wer e set to comparison the cellular growth and pigment production,e.g. total carotenoids, c hlorophyll a, and fucoxanthin,of Tisochrysisluteaon f/2 medium. The highest amount of f ucoxanthinand its productivity was achievedi n a 1-L batch culture at day 10th which was 4.04 mg L−1 and 0.4 mg L−1 d−1,respectively, based on fresh biomass samples.Not surprisingly, the highest amount of chlorophyll aa nd total carotenoids was achieved at day 10th which was 5.53 mg L-1 and 5.06 mg L−1, respectively.The biomass productivityof this microalga was0.598 g L-1 d-1 which strongly correlated with fucoxanthin productivity. Regarding the advantages of 1) higher biomass productivity, 2) higher growth rate, 3) higher fucoxanthin content and productivitysuggestthat T-Isocan be a commercial source for large scale production of this special metabolite among other stud ied species of microalgae.
