Phytoplanktons have most importance in controlling the status of aquatic ecosystems and provide suitable biological conditions for aquatic animals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the composition and abundance of Gorganrood(Southeast Caspian Sea) phytoplankton in three points monthly from April to March 2012. In total of 45 genus phytoplankton belonging to 6 phylum identified of these 7 genus were belonging to phylum Cyanophyta ,11genus to phylum Chlorophyta, 20genus to phylum Bacillariophyta, 4genus to phylum Dinophyta, 2genus to phylum Euglenophyta, 1genus to phylum Chrysophyta. The dominant genus of the phytoplankton community were including Anabena from Cyanophyta, Ankistrodesmos and Pediastrum from Chlorophyta, Gyrosigma, Navicula and Nitzschia from Bacillariophyta, Trachelomonas and Euglena from Euglenophyta. Almost 60% of samples were belong to 8 genus. The highest density was awarded Bacillariophyta phylum with 59% and the lowest was awarded Dinophyta and Crysophyta phylums with 1% of total phytoplankton abundance.
