In each aquatic ecosystem, phytoplankton is very important in terms knowledge of primary production and the assessment food webs in aquatic environment. To determine the distribution and abundance of phytoplankton communities in shrimp culture ponds of Gomishan(southeast Caspian Sea) during the breeding period from May to October 2016. Sampling was performed using one liter bottles in surface water at three points of the ponds. In the study of the phytoplankton community 6 phylum and 23 genus were identified, with domination of Dinophyta including 50% of the population during the breeding period. The important genus of this phylum is Pridinium, which is the most frequency with 24%. Chlorophyta phylum of Chlamydomonas genus with 16%, Bacillariophyta with Nitzschia genus 9% and Cyanophyta with genuss Aphanotece and Anabena to 9% and 8% of the population was next categories. A slight percent was alloated to the phylums of Euglenophyta and Cryptophyta. The highest mean of phytoplankton population was abserved with 16% in middle ponds.
