The Effect of Laser Polishing on Titanium Surface in Nitrogen Media

Laser ablation of titanium in nitrogen gas media using a fiber laser was studied. Titanium samples were irradiated using a fiber laser. The formation of titanium nitride (TiN) on the surface of laser ablated sample was verified by XRD. Then, laser polishing was applied in order to improve the surface roughness. After that, the effectiveness of laser polishing by remelting on the variation of TiN surface morphology was examined by SEM. It was concluded that laser polishing is a useful method to improve he surface properties of the materials.
