In recent years, increasing attention has been focused on the desulfurization of transportation fuels due to regulations for environmental protection. The adsorption method selectively removes sulfur compounds utilizing adsorbents at ambient temperature and pressure, in a much simplified way compared to the hydrotreating and other methodes. Adsorption of the organic sulfur compounds propyle mercaptane, dimethyle disulfide, thiophene and sulfone dibenzothiophene in organic model solutions of desulfurizated fuels was studied by a batch method at 39 ◦C using metal-impregnated X-zeolites. Although 13X-zeolite or its acidtreated material rarely adsorbed the organic sulfur compounds, NaX-zeolites impregnated with Ag+, Zn2+, and Ce3+ ions. impregnated with Ag+ ions showed markedly high adsorptive capacities for propyle mercaptane, dimethyle disulfide, thiophene and sulfone dibenzothiophene. The sulfur uptake increased in the order CeX-zeolite lt; ZnX-zeolite lt; AgX-zeolite for all the organic sulfur compounds. AgX-zeolite exhibits higher adsorptive selectivity for SDBT than others, indicating that AgXzeolite is a more effective adsorbent to remove sulfur compounds from transportation fuels.
