In this paper a new method is proposed for the direct thrust control of a linear induction motor (LIM) by using a 9-switch 3-level voltage source inverter (VSI). Compared to the other VSIs, this VSI comprises fewer number of switches and has a better dynamic performance. In the proposed method a 5-level and a 2-level hysteresis controller are used for the thrust and flux control, respectively. Taking into account the output of these controllers and the proposed switching table, the direct control of thrust and flux are fulfilled. Using a 3-level VSI results in the reduction of thrust ripple and the improvement of dynamic performance of the system. Moreover, in order to attain a precise simulation of the system, the end effect is applied in the dynamic model and the design of the controlling system. Efficiency of the proposed method is validated via the simulations implemented in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
