In this paper, a modified single-phase Z-source converter based on gamma structure is proposed. The proposed converter, like other single-phase Z-source converters, has the capability boost in-phase, buck out of phase and common ground between input and output. Also, due to eliminating output filter the converter volume and size is reduced. The safe commutation strategy is employed to protect switches against voltage and current overshoots without using any snubber circuit. The coupled transformer to generate high voltage gain is used. Therefore, in addition to the duty cycle, the voltage gain can be controlled by the transformer turn ratio. In the gamma structure, by reducing the transformer turn ratio, greater voltage gain can be achieved which this feature reduces the transformer winding costs. The proposed converter is analyzed in different operation modes and simulation results are presented in PSCAD-EMTDC software to validation of the calculated relationships and its performance.
