In this paper the variable rotor speed and variable blade pitch wind turbine operation in regions with high wind speeds is investigated where the objective is limiting the turbine energy capture to the nominal power value. To aim regulation of the rotor speed to a constant nominal value, in the presence of uncertainties characterizing the wind turbine model, this paper proposes a second order sliding mode approach, implementing the blade pitch as control input, also to approximate the uncertainties of the turbine model neural network is implemented. A closed loop convergence has been proved for the complete control system. Finally to illustrate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed controller the proposed method is applied to a 5 megawatt wind turbine.
