به طور حتم رشد روزافزون جمعيت از يك سو و كاهش نگران كننده منابع توليد مواد غذايي از سوي ديگر، لزوم توجه جدي به برنامه ريزي و سياست گذاري هاي ملي، و منطقه اي را جهت تضمين تأمين امنيت غذايي جامعه بيش از پيش ضروري نموده است. دامداري و دامپروري به عنوان مهمترين منبع تأمين پروتئين و غذا، در بهداشت و سلامت جامعه از جايگاه والايي برخوردار بوده و در حال حاضر اين بخش از كشاورزي به صورت صنعتي بزرگ و مهم در اقتصاد كشورها در آمده است. در اين مقاله كه به روش توصيفي و با استفاده از آمار و اطلاعات رسمي موجود در آمارنامه هاي كشاورزي و ساير مراجع ذيصلاح تدوين گرديده است، ضمن بررسي و شناسايي روند تغييرات بخش دام و دامپروري در ايران و جهان، به تبيين اهداف، برنامه ها و سياسته اي وزارت جهاد كشاورزي در اين حوزه مي پردازد. نتايج بررسي حاضر نشان از وجود تضادها و مغايرت هاي آماري مراجع مختلف در اين حوزه دارد كه اين امر مي تواند هدف گذاري و برنامه ريزي منسجم در جهت توليد پايدار پروتئين حيواني در كشور را با چالش هاي جدي مواجه نمايد و بنابراين پيشنهاد مي گردد در كنار توجه به زيرساخت ها و سرمايه گذاريهاي لازم در زمينه هاي فني و ژنتيكي، عنايت خاصي نيز به مقوله هاي نرمافزاري از قبيل مديريت دانش، فرهنگ سازي، توسعه منابع انساني و ترويج و آموزش در بخش دام كشور صورت پذيرد.
