The structure sensitivity of selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene over Pd-Ag/Al2O3 catalysts was studied. The catalysts were prepared by sequential impregnation with similar Pd (0.03 wt%) and Ag (0.09 wt%) loadings over Al2O3 spheres being sintered at different temperatures (1090, 1095 and 1100oC). The Pd dispersions were evaluated by CO chemisorption technique. The catalytic performance test were performed in a fixed-bed reactor at 60oC and 10bar. The TOF decreased from 225 to 87 s-1 as Pd dispersion increased from 7.5 to 10.5%. Time-average ethylene selectivity was increased from 73.8 to 89.4% as average pore diameter was increased from 363 to 1070Å; which is a consequence of facilitation in diffusion of species in and out of the pores. The results revealed that textural properties of the support had influence on catalytic performance and reaction rates, in terms of turn-over frequency (TOF), strongly depended on Pd active metal dispersion implying structure sensitivity of the reaction over this catalyst type.
