The effect of chemical structure of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) support membrane on the reverse osmosis performance of thin film composite (TFC) membrane was studied. Accordingly, PAN support membrane was hydrolyzed using alkaline at different contact times. The hydrolyzed support membranes were subjected to interfacial polymerization (IP) process using m-phenylendiamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) monomers. The structures of resultant polyamide TFC membranes were characterized by SEM analysis. Additionally, the performance of as-prepared TFC membranes was investigated through desalination of brackish water (2000 ppm) at 7 bar. The results showed that hydrolysis of PAN support layer decreases both salt rejection and permeate flux of as-prepared TFC membrane when compared with non-hydrolyzed support membrane. It seems that hydrolysis leads to increase hydrophilicity of support layer and as a consequence less extended polyamide layer may be formed. Therefore, it can be concluded that the hydrolysis of PAN weakens separation performance of PA/PAN TFC membrane.
