Formation damage is an undesirable reduction of near-wellbore permeability of petroleum formations by various operations. Phase trapping (PT) is one of the common formation-damage mechanisms that can be occurred in oil and gas reservoirs. This mechanism causes adverse effects on production and injection operations. For this reasons, recognition of this formation damage is important. Several diagnostic methods has been proposed to evaluate the reservoir’s potential for PT. This methods base on different sets of reservoir parameters by use of number of aqueous-phase-trap tests or established on the theory. The potential severity of a reservoir to PT is controlled by several major factors, namely: capillarity (i.e., pore geometry, wettability, and IFT), curvature of the relative permeability curves, fluid-saturation levels, viscosity of the invading phase, invasion depth, reservoir temperature, pressure, and drawdown potential. In this study, we review and evaluate diagnostic methods that have been presented in the literature for PT and the comparison between methods is done. Except PTI method that was developed analytically on the basis of infiltration theory, the others was established on the basis of different sets of the key influential factors (e.g., k; ϕ; Swi;..) by use of the results of a number of PT tests over a limited range of rock and fluid properties. Compared with other correlations, PTI offers several advantages such as generality, being founded on theory, time dependent and taking into account most of the key influential parameters.
