Gas separation using blend membranes is now attracting many attentions for separation of CO2 from gasous mixtures. This study evaluates utilization of imidazolium-based ionic liquid to modify Matrimid®5218 polymeric membrane. Blend membranes containing up to 35 wt% 1-ethyl-3 methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Emim][Tf2N]) ionic liquid (IL) were prepared and their CO2 separation performances were evaluated at 4 bar and 35 ˚C. SEM-EDX analysis illustrated homogeneous dispersion of IL in the blend membrnaes and DSC results indicated decreasing trend for Tg values of the blend membranes compared to the neat one due to the IL plasticization effect. By addition of 35 wt% IL, CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 selectivity were linearly increased with steep slopes. This behavior can be attributed to high diffusivity of CO2 in the IL domains inside the polymeric membrane. Therefore, these membranes can be potentially selected for preparation of industrial blend membranes applicable for bulk removal of CO2 from natural gas.
