In this research, the dispersed phase holdup was investigated in a horizontal pulsed sieve-plate extraction column(HPPEC). Experiments have been carried out using standard systems of water/acetone/toluene and water/acetone/n-butyl–acetate. Experiments were carried out in three modes, without mass transfer and with mass transfer (mass transfer direction from organic phase to aqueous phase and the inverse direction from the aqueous phase to organic phase). The acetone concentration in both states (with mass transfer) is 3.5% vol. The effects of pulse intensity and flow rates of both liquid phases have been investigated. The results show that when the mass transfer direction is from the continuous phase to the dispersed phase, the size of the droplets is smaller than the state without mass transfer and causing the dispersed phase holdup will increase. Also, in the mass transfer from the dispersed phase to the continuous phase, the dispersed phase holdup decreases in comparison the state of without mass transfer.
