Ethyl benzene is one of highly consumed raw materials in chemical industry which is exclusively used for production of styrene monomer. Commercially, almost all ethyl benzene productions are performed by alkylation of benzene using ethylene in presence of aluminum chloride catalyst or synthetic zeolites in liquid phase. Due to the importance of this basic component, its production process has been regarded very serious by many researchers. This process includes two main parts: reactor and separation system. This research presents a new methodology to gain the best process flow diagram for ethyl benzene production which is based on conceptual design principles. In this study for reactor section two scenarios, adiabatic and non-adiabatic; and for separation system also two scenarios, direct and indirect sequential columns, have been considered. The results of "economic potential function for different scenarios show that the best configuration of process includes non adiabatic alkylation reactor, direct distillation column sequence and adiabatic reactor in trans alkylation system. The economic potential for this process is 246,218,667 S/yr.
