In an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) system, mass transfer rate depends on interfacial area between the two phases, therefore the mean diameter of emulsion globules and the drop size distribution are important characteristics for design and scale-up of the system. In the present study, the effects of hydrodynamic parameters including the impeller speed, flow ratio and total flow on the drop size and the drop size distribution have been investigated. The water-in-oil emulsion used in this study was consisted of distillated water, kerosene and span 80. The experiments have been carried out in a horizontal mixer settler system in continuous mode and without considering the effect of mass transfer. The results implied that the impeller speed, flow ratio and total flow play important roles in determining the Sauter mean diameter and the drop size distribution. It was found that the experimental drop size distributions were in excellent agreement with the normal distribution function.
