Vegetable oil refinery wastewater (VORW) are high in COD, oil and grease (O&G), sulphate and phosphate content, resulting in both high inorganic as well as organic loading of the relevant wastewater treatment works. In this study, the potential of aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) for the treatment of VORW was investigated at three different sludge retention times (SRTs) of 10, 40 and 100 days. The hydraulic retention times of these three phases were controlled at 18 h. The results showed that steady state average COD removal efficiency did not change dramatically with increasing SRT, however, increasing SRT from 10 to 100 days caused substantial decrease in the average O&G removal efficiency from 75.1±2.5% to 62.1±4.0%, respectively, due to reduction of oil discharge associated with biomass from the reactor to maintain the SRT at constant value. During the operation of the MBR, there was a consistently low turbidity in the MBR effluent (lower that 2.5 NTU) and also, no fouling occurred on membrane surface throughout the operation.
