Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have gained a lot of attention in recent years as they are capable of converting organic waste into electricity. In this research, biological denitrification in the anode compartment of an up-flow microbial fuel cell was investigated using sodium acetate as the carbon source. After immobilization and acclimation of activated sludge for 40 days, the denitrification tests were started and effluent nitrate concentration was found to be acceptable when its initial concentration was below 150 mg/L NO3- and nitrate removal percentage of about 94.77% could be attained. Additionally, the maximum nitrate removal rate was 0.08 kg NO3-N/(m3 NAC.day). The production of nitrite and ammonium was also investigated and their concentrations were below standard limit for drinking water which shows that complete denitrification was acquired. It was verified that denitrifying MFC not only could remove nitrate from drinking water, but also played a role for continuous generation of electricity.
