In the present study, a series of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing Carbonyl iron powders (CIPs) were fabricated to study the role of post-heat treatment on their oxygen-nitrogen separation performance. In order to perform our investigations, mixed matrix membranes were produced by using CIPs with various loadings into the Polysulfone matrix. Obtained results show that the permeability of membranes enhances when particles are added. In addition, the permeability increased to the maximum point as the membranes contained 10 wt% CIPs loading (5.4 barrer). However, the selectivity of MMMs was less than the neat Polysulfone. Heat treatment at temperatures below polymer glass transition temperature (Tg) resulted in densified structure while heat treatment above Tg increases the gas permeability of membranes through the changes in free volume of membranes. Our findings show that the maximum O2 permeability (5.7 barrer) was attained when CIPs loadings were 10 wt% and heat treatment applied at 220°C.
