Biodesufurization is an emerging sulfur removal technology that relies on the capability of microoraganisms to cleavage of carbon-sulfur bonds in hydrocarbon fuels. Rhodococcus sp. FUM94 is a newly identified desulfurizing strain that posses 4S metabolic pathway essential for removing sulfur compounds such as DBT. In this study, the FUM94 potential for metabolizing DBT and producing 2HBP was quantified and compared with similar strains reported in the literature. The new strain of Rhodococcus sp. FUM94 is capable of removing recalcitrant sulfur compound of DBT from fossil fuel.FUM94 strain with final optical density more than 4.0 and about 85% maximum DBT conversion had good growth characteristics and it had comparable biodesulfurization potential with peer wild type biocatalysts.
