In this work, with the aim of the improvement of the membrane anti-biofouling ability, poly vinylimidazole (PVI) was grafted to a commercial thin film composite polyamide membrane (TFC PA) by free radical polymerization method. ATR-FTIR and water contact angle (WCA) analyses verified the successful graft polymerization. SEM images showed no meaningful change in the membrane morphology after modification process. Measuring the membrane performance through desalination process demonstrated that introduction of PVI to the membrane surface leaded to the noticeable enhancement of the membrane water flux (roughly 43%), despite reduction of the salt rejection (approximately 1.1%). Static evaluation of the membrane anti-biofouling property using Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a bio-foulant model during various exposure times revealed that PVI-modified membrane was more resistant to the E. coli growth and water flux of the modfied membrane was less declined compared to the virgin one.
