Nowadays green microalgae are considered as a promising potential for renewable and clean hydrogen (H2) production. However, low yield of photobiological H2 production has made this process almost industrially impractical. The main drawback is that the photosynthetic O2 evolution inhibits both expression and activity of hydrogenases, which are responsible for H2 generation. In this study, we examined the influence of co-culturing the alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C.reinhardtii), a model organism widely used to study H2 production with Pseudomonas putida (P. putida) that is one of the dominant bacteria in the phycosphere of this alga at low light intensity. Results showed that C.reinhardtii almost did not grow in presence of P. putida regardless of the initial inoculum of this bacteria. However, an optimum initial inoculum of P.
putida was found in term of H2 production in co-culture.
