Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/chitosan (CS) miscibility is a problem at low contents of CS. In this work, the PVA/CS blended membranes in different compositions (90/10, 85/15 and 80/20) were successfully fabricated using phase inversion technique. In this method, NaOH/Na2SO4 aqueous solution was used for the first time, as coagulation media. The microstructures, morphology, chemical composition and thermal properties were also characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The SEM images showed that asymmetric membranes with uniform dense layer and porous sub-layer were prepared via phase inversion method. It was observed that PVA and CS with the above-mentioned compositions made a miscible blend. The structure analysis indicated strong interactions and good miscibility of PVA and CS molecules due to formation of hydrogen bonds.
