Effect of polyurethane-isocyanate microcapsules on self-healing properties of an acrylic-melamine coating

In this research, microcapsule with isophorone diisocyanate core and polyurethane shell were prepared for using in self-healing coatings. Microcapsules synthesized were characterized using scanning electron microscope. The microcapsules was dispersed in an acrylic-melamine clearcoat and the scratch resistance and self-healing features were evaluated. As a results, smooth spherical particles with a diameter of 1.5 to 1.7 micron were observed using a scanning electron microscope. The microcapsules dispersed in an acrylic-melamine clearcoat, increased the scratch resistance of coatings. Also, the self-healing feature of those coatings has been proved.
