Lake Urmia is the second biggest saline lake in the world. The effect of microalgae Dunaliella salina (a green unicellular microalgae) on color change of this lake is remarkable. Large amount of beta-carotene is accumulated in Dunaliella salina cells when growing in saline water and leads to lake color change to red. In this work, beta-carotene amount in two different salty shocks (1 and 2 M) has been studied. Furthermore, the effect of salt injection time on growth of microalgae has been considered. The highest biomass concentration of Dunaliella salina obtained for the sample which was faced 1 M salty shock at 6th day of cultivation. Also, the highest amount of beta-carotene was 6.85 μg per mg of dry weight of microalgae for salty shock of 1M at 12th day of cultivation. Based on the results the highest beta-carotene accumulation in Dunaliella salina cells was occurred in logarithmic phase of growth between 6th to 13th days of cultivation.
