Films of PLA/PVDF blends were prepared. The films were characterized by various methods to determine the sate of miscibility of two component polymers It was found that PVDF and PLA formed a miscible blend only at very low content of PLA where PVDF formed the continous phase. The blends were highly incompatible when PLA was the major component. Scaning Electron microscopy revealed that PVDF rich blends were single phase with no segregated regions. The films appeared as clear and transparant to visible light. In contract, PLA rich blends had a porous morphology and looked milky white. DSC results showed that the the PVDF rich blends have a single melting point located between the melting points of the neat PVDF and PLA. The changes in crystalline structure of PVDF by addition of PLA was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. While the PLA rich blends showed poor mechanical properties, the tensile properties the PVDF rich blends remained at a favorable level.
