In this study, the effect of citric acid (CA) and TiO2 nanoparticles on the morphology and performance of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiltration (NF) membranes is investigated. The results demonstrate that the pure water flux (PWF) of the membranes is increased from 108.79 to 131.47 (lit.m-2.hr-1) by adding TiO2 nanoparticles up to 1 wt.% into the dope solution. Also, PWF of membranes is enhanced from 119.70 to 127.42 (lit.m-2.hr-1) by increasing CA content up to 0.75 wt.% in the dope solution. However, further increment in the CA concentration up to 1.5 wt.% leads to a reduction in PWF of membranes down to 98.79 (lit.m-2.hr-1). From morphological point of view, a more uniform finger like porous structure is formed by adding TiO2 nanoparticles to the dope solution. Finally, the overall membrane porosity is promoted from 51.72% to 54.46% by adding CA up to 0.75 wt.% and from 45.74% to 63.28% by increasing the concentration of TiO2 up to 1 wt.% in the dope solution.
