This research investigates the removal of bacteria from water sources by a porous microfiltration system. The effect of citric acid (CA) and polymer concentration as morphological membrane design parameters are studied on microfiltration membrane performance. Results show that by increasing the polymer concentration from 15 wt.% to 17 wt.% lead to reduce the average pore size of membrane. This results an increment in the amount of bacteria rejection. Moreover, pure water flux permeability reduces from 297 to 230 (L.m-2hr-1) by increasing polymer concentration. On the other hand, the amount of bacteria rejection increases by addition of CA to the dope solution from 3.259 to 3.664 and 4.37 to 4.52 for 15 wt.% and 17 wt.% PAN, respectively. Also the pure water flux and average pore size of the membrane reduces. All membranes exhibit bacteria (E.coli) log reduction value (LRV) at least 3.2.
