This study reports on the impacts of surface morphology as well as physicochemical membrane features on fouling. Dead-end microfiltration of Collagen was conducted using pure HDPE and HDPE/PE-g-MA/EVA blend membranes. Fouling mechanisms were analyzed using RIS model. RIS model suggested that flux decline was mainly due to irreversible resistance and reversible cake resistance for pure and blend membranes, respectively. Flux recovery after physical cleaning increased from 8.21% for the pure membrane to 32.33% for the blend membrane. The results of flux recovery also were confirmed by FESEM analysis after membrane cleaning; for the pure membrane, a thick cake layer had remained on the membrane surface. In contrast, for the blend membrane nearly the entire cake layer was removed after cleaning procedure. In fact, in the case of the pure membrane, more adhesion force between membrane surface and collagen molecules accelerated the accumulation of proteins on the membrane surface leads to form a thick cake layer. Moreover, due to strong adhesion force, this layer can be detached from the membrane surface much more difficult than that in the blend membrane, lead to poor flux recovery. Differences in the results indicated the importance of membrane characteristics on the rate and extent of fouling.
