In this work a mathematical model was developed for water in crude oil separation in a non-homogeneous batch gravity coalescer. Population balance integration terms were simplified by fixed pivot technique. Due to the complexity of coalescer behaviour, a partial differential equation set was obtained in the model. Each partial differential equation was converted to ordinary equation (ODE) set using method of line and MATLAB programming was used to solve ODE sets. As a result, number density was calculated in terms of time and height of coalescer. The results were compared with experimental data. Finally, the amount of separated water from crude oil was calculated as a function of time.
