Adsorption of U(VI) ions from aqueous solution onto a novel amidoximated modified calcium alginate bead with entrapped functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles with variation in SiO2 and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane(TMPTMS) contents was studied. The effect of SiO2 and TMPTMS weight percentages on sorption capacity of U(VI) ions onto the fabricated beads were investigated in different amounts of SiO2 (2-20 wt. % with respect to the sodium alginate weight) and TMPTMS (10-50 wt. % with respect to sodium alginate weight), respectively. The maximum sorption capacity of U(VI) was 80 mg/g at 5 wt. % of SiO2 and 30 wt. % of TMPTMS. The adsorption capacity of U(VI) was studied with a pH 4, initial concentration 120 mg/l, adsorbent dosage 1 g/l and temperature 25 oC. The sorption capacity of U(VI) by amidoximated modified calcium alginate beads without entrapped functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles was 22 mg/g at the same conditions. Therefore, a clear increase in uranium(VI) adsorption capacity is obtained by this novel bead.
