Nowadays, the amount of nitrate and nitrite anions, final products of nitrogen compounds oxidation is an important chemical indicato of water pollution.The presence of nitrate in water causes goiter and thyroid disorders, cancer, hypertension and methemoglobinemia. Because the anions have high solubility in water, so removing these components is so difficult and has a lot of costs. Up to now, various adsorbents have been used for removing the nitrate from water and the ion exchange resin adsorbents have been a good option as a nitrate adsorbents since it has the selective ability. In this study, preparation and activation of Purolite A520E ion exchange resin have been used for nitrate absorption. Resins were activated via five methods, of extraction of impurities with ethanol using soxhlet, washing the resin with acid and base, washing the resin with acid and base after extraction in soxhlet, washing the resin with distilled water and resin without any washing. In conclusion, the resin was washed with acid and base had the highest nitrate removal capacity.
