A novel anaerobic-aerobic bioreactor for organic and phosphate removal from wastewater Organic material and phosphate are the main cause of eutrophication that negatively affects many natural water bodies, both fresh water and marine. It is desirable that water treatment facilities remove phosphorus from the wastewater before they are discharge to the environment. Anaerobic–aerobic systems have been widely employed in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment for many years. While previously most treatment of wastewaters have been carried out in conventional anaerobic–aerobic treatment plants, in recent years, high rate anaerobic–aerobic bioreactors have been increasingly employed for wastewaters with high chemical oxygen demand (COD). A combined upflow anaerobic fixed-bed (UAF-B), using kaldnes type one as a biofilm support, and a suspended aerobic activated sludge bioreactor with kaldnes type one as biofilm has been designed. This system exhibited high performance on the removal of organic matter. COD removal efficiencies were in the range of 65–90% with organic loading rates (OLR) of 3.67–16.56 kg COD m−3 per day. Phosphorous material were removed from the wastewater in range of 30–95%.
