Polyethersulfone hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane has been modified by means of UVinitiated graft polymerization technique using the weakly acidic monomer acrylic acid and the immersion method. Different UV-irradiation times were studied. Both the unmodified and the modified polyethersulfone membranes were characterized by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR-ATR) and dynamic contact angle (CA) analyses. Irreversible membrane fouling has been studied by using milk solution. It was observed that modified membranes exhibited higher permeance that the unmodified polyether sulfone ultrafiltration membrane.The obtained results indicate higher hydrophilicity of the surface modified membranes in comparison to the neat membrane and irreversible fouling by milk was reduced after UVinitiated graft polymerization by acrylic acid.
