The present study aimed to assess the efficiency of the electromagnetic fields with an iron core and without a core in the removal of COD from the municipal wastewater (initial COD of 250 mg.l-1). The effects of contact time, pH, and electromagnetic intensity on the optimization of each factor per unit of time was evaluated. The results showed that the rate of COD removal was 61% at contact time of 30 minutes and pH=3 on low electromagnetic field intensity of 0.004 Tesla (without metal core). However, the rate of COD removal increased to 81% in optimal conditions (contact time: 30 minutes, pH=3) at electromagnetic field intensity of 0.02 Tesla (with metal core). According to the obtained results, electromagnetic field with metal core would be a remarkable and potential technology for COD removal from municipal and/or industrial wastewater.
