گوهرها، كاني‌ها و يا سنگ‌هايي هستند كه به دو گروه قيمتي و نيمه قيمتي تقسيم مي‌شوند. هركدام از اين گوهرها تحت شرايط مختلف زمين‌شناسي و در طيف گسترده‌اي از دما و فشار تشكيل مي‌شوند. تاكنون 200 محدوده باارزش سنگ‌هاي قيمتي در ايران شناسايي‌شده‌اند و ايران مي‌تواند مجموعه‌اي ارزشمند از سنگ‌هاي قيمتي باشد اما متأسفانه مطالعات دقيق و نظام‌مندي بر روي سنگ‌هاي قيمتي انجام نپذيرفته است. با توجه به كميابي گوهرسنگ‌هاي الماس، بريل و ياقوت و اينكه تاكنون معدني از اين نوع گوهرسنگ‌ها در ايران يافت نشده است در اين پژوهش تلاش شده كه شرايط زمين‌شناسي تشكيل هركدام از كاني‌هاي نامبرده را در مقياس جهاني شناسايي كرده و با تطبيق اطلاعات به‌دست‌آمده با شرايط موجود در ايران بين دو كاني با استفاده از تحليل سلسله مراتبي كه يكي از مهم‌ترين و پركاربردترين روش‌هاي تصميم‌گيري چند شاخصه است، از بين كاني‌هاي موجود با توجه به معيارها براي اكتشاف بهترين آن‌ها، تصميم‌گيري كنيم.
