The volumetric overall mass transfer coefficients of a pulsed perforated plate extraction column have been measured
using two different liquid-liquid systems. The effects of operational variables such as pulsation intensity and dispersed
and continuous phases flow rates on volumetric overall mass transfer coefficients have been investigated and found to
be significant. The variations of volumetric overall mass transfer coefficients along the column have also been
investigated. In the present work, the dispersed phase overall mass transfer coefficient was predicted by using the twofilm
model, i.e., the addition of two individual resistances of the dispersed and continuous phases. Dispersed phase
mass transfer coefficient was calculated from Handlos and Baron equation and by using which an empirical correlation
was proposed for prediction of continuous phase mass transfer coefficient. The prediction of overall mass transfer
coefficients from the presented model is in good agreement with experimental results.
