In this study, the Multiobjective optimization of a reactive distillation (RD) process with Non-Sorting
Genetic Algorithm for the production of tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME) by etherification of isoamylenes with methanol
is reported. The reactive distillation is run with an excess of methanol because it is needed for both the reaction and the
azeotropic vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE) requirements in the column. Both mathematical modeling of reactive and
non-reactive (stripping & rectifying) sections of reactive distillation column were used for the optimization of process
for maximizing of TAME purity, methanol recovery and minimizing of energy consumption. The Non-Sorting Genetic
Algorithm II was employed for the optimization problem. The adjustable parameters are two feed temperatures, Reflux
ratio of column, methanol to C5s (MeOH/C5s) ratio, and feed tray positions. Results show that amylenes feed
temperature between 74 0C to 78 0C, methanol feed temperature between 70 0C to 72 0C, and reflux ratio 4.0 are
optimum values for industrial TAME production cases.
