In this research the breakup of a liquid jet, injected vertically upward into another immiscible liquid has been
studied. The jet length has been measured experimentally throughout the investigation.
The chemical system was chosen according to the standard test system recommended by EFCE, n-butanol-succinic
acid-water as a typical example of liquid- liquid extraction system with low interfacial tension.
The effect of various parameters such as nozzle diameter, jet velocity and the height of continuous phase on jet
length have been investigated and the effect of mass transfer directions (from dispersed to continuous or continuous to
dispersed) on jet length has also been studied.
A correlation is presented in order to predict jet length as a function of physical properties of both phases and
aforementioned parameters.
Based on the experimental results, jet length increases with increase in nozzle diameter, while increasing the height
of the continuous phase decreases the jet length.
It can be seen that when the mass transfer direction is from continuous to dispersed phase longer and more stable jet
is formed.
A reasonable agreement between the experimental data with presented correlation has been observed.
