Metal foams are a new, as yet imperfectly characterized, class of materials with low densities and novel physical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and acoustic properties. Copper is one of the standard materials for electrical applications because it provides more current carrying capacity for a given diameter of wire than any other engineering metal. Among the various steps of copper production from liquid metal, a lot of scrap is generated due to machining operations. This article describes Lost Carbonate Sintering (LCS) process for manufacturing open cell copper foam from copper turning chips. Porous Cu was fabricated by dissolution the filler materials from sintered copper chips. The relative densities and compressive properties of the copper foams have been investigated for different metal weight fractions ranging from 40–80%. The elastic modulus measurements were approximately in good agreement with Mori- Tanaka predictions for the two phase mixtures. In addition the effect of addition CuO and Al powders in precursor for generation Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) for manufacturing Cu-Al2O3 nanocomposites was investigated.
