In this study medium density polyethylene (MDPE) grafted glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) has been synthesized in
molten state and applied for compatibilization of MDPE/polyamid6 (PA6) and MDPE/poly (ethylene terephtalate)
(PET) blends. Graft copolymerization of GMA onto MDPE has been performed in presence and absence of styrene.
Maximum grafting has reached in 0.6 phr concentration of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) for styrene contained samples and
0.7 phr of DCP for styrene free samples. Grafting yield of 91% has been achieved for styrene containing samples.
Toque-time measurement showed that in presence of styrene, reaction rate is faster. High grafting and MFI content is
desirable, in this respect optimum concentration of DCP in styrene contained samples is 0.1 phr and for styrene free
samples is in range of 0.4-0.6 phr. Four grafted MDPE samples have been applied for compatibilizing of blends. Effect
of compatibilizers on mechanical and morphological properties of the blends has been studied by tensile test and SEM
studies. Tensile results indicated that presence of compatibilizers in blends led to 250% and 133% increase in
elongation at break for PA6 and PET blends respectively. Also average particle size has decreased 350% for PA6 and
300% for PET blends compared with nonreactive blends.
