A microspherical composite adsorbent for uptake of heavy metal ions was developed by immobilizing of nano zeolite Y
in the bio-polymeric matrix of calcium alginate. Distribution coefficient of Co2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Sr2+, UO2
2+ , Th 4+, Hf
4+, Zr 4+ ions were determined for the produced microspheres; and it was found that the new adsorbent has high affinity
for adsorption of lead, uranium, strontium and hafnium. The kinetics of strontium and uranium uptake was examined by
a stirred reactor and the data were modeled using shrinking core model (SCM). The kinetics model indicated that the
rate controlling step was the slow chemical reaction of the diffused ions with the zeloite nano particles dispersed in the
alginate matrix.
